CPR / First Aid

It's been a while since my last CPR and First Aid certification. Probably around 3 years -- definitely overdue. This past weekend I attended a course and found that CPR in particular had changed substantially from before. Glad I went. The girls have a Volleyball league coming up and I am one of the First Aid volunteers. On top of that, I need the certifications as a leader for Girl Scout and Boy Scout outings.

The instructor is someone that I met through Boy Scouts. He was one of the Asst. Scoutmasters in the troop. He is a registered nurse and has been certified for CPR and First Aid training for many years. He is both knowledgable and an effective teacher -- a nice combination. Celeste of course knows him too and had arranged this training for local Girl Scout leaders.

We all have things that we do to make it feel like we are making a difference in the world. This is one of mine.

Are you really making a difference? I mean, how many times have you actually performed CPR on someone? I suggest at least once a week, grab someone you don't know and perform CPR on them.

Diana got to use the Heimlich Maneuver while waiting at the bus stop one day. younger girl was chokeing on a hard candy.

And here I am praying I'll never have to use my CPR or first aid. I need it for both my regular job, and of course Girl Scouts.

In both cases, I'm surrounded by people with the same training, and I'm hoping I'd be the one going to call 911.

Our CPR trainer is our Physical Therapist. I like her take on CPR. You only start CPR if there are no signs of life. So the person is already basically dead. You can't do anything worse - so go for it! (and hope they don't sue you for cracked ribs if they manage to survive & come back)
