An afternoon around Cheshire County, England

On my trip to UK last month, I got to spend my last afternoon seeing some of the local sights. One of my customers was kind enough to escort me around some of the countryside around Crewe.

On our first stop, I introduced him to Geocaching. We found the first cache, Carmen Geddit, in some local woods. It turns out that we took the difficult way in while wearing work clothes. The mud and thorns almost turned us back, but we were undaunted and got our prize. I left some US State Quarters and took some small trinkets.

We tried one other cache in a "Cheshire Ring" series, but did not find it. I did get to find out about Canal Boat Holidays and saw some of the boats nearby. I had never heard of this before. It sounds interesting. The locks to change from one level of waterway to another are manually controlled by the boaters. The boats sound very comfortable inside (like narrow RVs). Operating those locks might get old after awhile, but it would be interesting to try it out and see!

Done with Geocaching, we drove off to check out Jodrell Banks. These are some large telescopes out in the middle of the pastures of central England. Very impressive to see these rising from a distance! We arrived too late to visit up close, but I did get a photo with the largest of the radio telescopes in the background.

Our last stop of the day was at Beeston Castle. Due to some traffic delays, we also arrived after it was closed. However, the approach to the area and driving the outer perimeter were worth the drive! I did get to walk up to the main gate, but the castle itself was at the top of a hill. It was mainly in ruins, but I could make out walls and part of the structure from a distance. I can definitely understand the strategic setting for this castle that was built almost 800 years ago!

Special thanks to Glen Small (who will probably never read this) for showing me around and taking the photos with the camera on his phone. Even when it was getting dark at Beeston Castle, we managed to get one decent photo!
